An exciting feature of this event is the use of Down Headshunt at Llangollen station. Two movements a day using 79960 are booked to depart or arrive Llangollen via this extremely rare piece of track.

The Saturday night barbecue will take place at Glyndyfrdwy, hot dogs, burgers, and a selection of cakes will be on sale, along with drinks. We hope to see you all there.

Visitor Announced

A diminutive train that once was touted as the saviour of Britain’s branch lines but in the event only lasted in service for 10 years is to be the guest of honour at the Llangollen Railway’s annual railcar event, which takes place on June 11/12.

Railbus 79960 was built in Germany by Waggon Und Maschinenbau more than half a century ago as an experiment for British Railways to see if more traffic could be drawn to little used lines by the use of lightweight vehicles – a move that had been very successful in mainland Europe. Introduced to service in 1958 the tiny train, one of the smallest to operate in the UK, was used in East Anglia and in the North East before being laid aside as the lines for which it had been intended were closed under the Beeching programme.

Preserved as long ago as 1968 the train served the North Norfolk Railway for 44 years before moving on to the Ribble Steam Railway near Preston. It will visit Llangollen for one weekend only where it will run alongside the Llangollen Railway’s unique collection of 1950s railcar trains which include several rare or unique examples.

Railcars offer the travelling public unrivalled views of the surrounding countryside including the ability to see the line as the driver sees it, thanks to the provision of observation-style cab windows at each end of the train.

The weekend will see a very intensive timetable with departures from Llangollen and Carrog at half-hourly intervals and from Corwen every hour. Railcars will run in many different formations and there will be an opportunity for passengers to hop on and off at stations along the line thanks to the provision of rover tickets.

Prior to the event on the Friday evening there will be a photographic evening featuring the railbus during which it will stop at various locations all along the valley, while on the Saturday evening there will be a social event and barbecue.

Tickets for the event will be available on the day but can also be purchased in advance and at a discount by going to http://www.llangollen-railway.co.uk/events/ More details can be found by visiting www.llangollenrailcars.co.uk or www.llangollen-railway.co.uk

Dates Announced

We are pleased to announce that the annual Railcar Gala will take place on the weekend of the 11th and 12th of June 2016. We will update this page as the details of the event are confirmed.

It is hoped to run a photo charter with the visiting unit on the Friday evening (10th of June), and a BBQ on the Saturday evening; including our ever popular driver experience runs. We will also be operating a timetable A service on June 13th, four days of non-stop DMU action!

Our galas have become a major event in the annual DMU calendar, featuring a wide range of units over the years, to whet your appetite have a look at these photos from the past few years.

Class 101

50160 & 50164 gained the name "Daisy" during mainline use, and was one of the last Class 101 units to be used in North Wales. It carried passengers for the first time in several years when it visited Llangollen for the 2014 gala .Photo By Mike Martin

Class 122

2013 was a unique year where we had two guest units for the event, the first of which was 55005 visting from the Battlefield line, the first time it had been away from there since preservation in 1992. It is pictured being delivered to Llangollen. Photo By Karl Latham

Class 121

The second visiting unit was ex Arriva Trains Wales Bubble 121032 shortly after being withdrawn from mainline service. The last bubble used to carry passengers on the mainline in Wales. It would carry its last passengers in Wales during its visit to Llangollen before eventually being preserved at the Wensleydale Railway. It is seen here being used to haul 55005 to Pentrefelin TMD. Class 141

After spending time on loan to the Weardale railway our own Class 141 became the star attraction at our 2012 gala. It stopped off at Llangollen on its way back to our second base at the Midland Railway Butterly. Photo By Unknown
